Popcorn and Textured Ceiling Repair and Skim Coat

I have been skim coating walls and ceilings for many years. Skim is a term to mean a thin layer of plaster or Joint Compound over a large area. This will smooth out the surface and help it look new and fresh as well as correct any unwanted texture or unevenness.

Here is a ceiling I did in Nashville where I scrapped off the light texture and applied a few layers of plaster over it and painted it with ceiling paint.

Here is an example of what skim coat is. I use a drywall blade to apply joint compound  over an wall that has already been painted.  The idea is to smooth the walls and sand and prime then paint. This creates a new looking wall with no bumps, defects, unevenness and un-sightly walls. Call me @ Six 1 Five-Five 86-5400 or email me @ judthepainter at (@)gmail.com

Skim Coat with Joint Compound Plaster

This was a job I did a few years back. I applied Joint Compound over the existing walls so that they would look smooth again after it dried and was sanded and painted.

The customer was the “Singing Nazi” for the play: the Producers.

The project took a few days and was in Manhattan, New York.

Using Lime Wash Glaze Over Painted Brick to Create a Brick “Washed” Look

Creating a “distressed” look over old painted brick walls

On this job, the customer wanted to cover up the many layers of bad paint jobs over the brick walls in the office.

I suggested  a base coat of a red brick color and a lime wash glaze. This created a look of an old European distressed look while not actually re-created red brick.

The result looked good. The brick walls and skim-coat walls with color looks great.

Plaster Repair Job in Queens. Ceiling Renovation

Here are some pics My helper, Dave, and I worked on a job out in Queens NY, and repaired a ceiling in a one family house. We are applying joint compound and plaster of Paris to the ceiling. It could be called a “Skim-Coat” because we cover a wide area of space as opposed to a small area which would be consider a “patch”.
